Update: A car, a roof mounted bicycle and 7 feet of clearance...

In August I drove me car, roof rack and bicycle underneath a 7' clearance bar. Here's an update:

There is good news and there is bad news.

The good:

  • I determined that I do not have to replace my two bike mounts, which would have cost around $100 per bike mount. Yakima sells replacement parts and I can go through a local shop to acquire the parts I need. Cost: $35 each.

  • I should still be able to use my roof rack. The dents above the doors are behind where the Q-Tower mounts would rest so there should not be any issue.

The Bad:

  • I have an estimate to fix the damage to my car. Cost: $2600.

  • Insurance will cover it but we put a claim in within the past year. Sure, our rates would go up a bit but what happens if we absolutely need to put in another claim within the next 3 years? Not good.

So what am I going to do? Most likely I'll wait for our tax return and/or company bonus in the spring and pay cash. For now though, I'm going to get some touch up paint to make sure rust doesn't set in.
