A car, a roof mounted bicycle and 7 feet of clearance...

...not the ideal combination.

At work we have a stupid 7' Clearance bar in our (open air) parking lot. I happened to have my bicycle at work. I was going to bring it home for the weekend so I rolled it out to my car, fastened it to my Yakima roof rack. I proceeded to back out of the parking space, started to drive forward and 20 feet later heard this odd sound. I stopped my car already feeling I knew what happened. I slide back my sunroof shade and lo-and-behold, no bicycle and no roof rack on the top of my car. I get out of my car and see that both my bike and roof rack were ripped clean off of the car and lay 10 feet behind me.

Yakima Roof Rack Damage
Aug 16, 2006 - 8 Photos

The actual roof rack (the 2 crossbars and Q-Towers) appear to be undamaged, but both bike mounts will need to be replaced. The car has two nice dents above the rear doors where the rear rack mounts were located. There is minor damage above the front doors. The roof of the car has two deep scratches and a dent from where the right wheel tray dug in while it was being sheared off of the car. I'm not looking forward to the estimate to fix the damage.
