My Every Day Carry (EDC)

The job I started in June 2011 is a 50 minute train ride away. The train stop is only a few minutes from my house by car, and a few minutes walk once I get off. While it would be nice if it was in the idealic "Downtown Portland", or the swanky "Pearl District", I'm a block off of the Lloyd Center shopping mall in a government building of all places.

While I like to be prepared for the unexpected (from my days as a Boy Scout?), I feel there is only so much you can be prepared for when you're smack dab in the middle of civilization. For that reason I typically only carry with me the items I will actually use that day or have a high potential for using. I currently carry three different notebooks but need to get it down to one (I'm almost scared to write anything in my Moleskines that don't live up to the perceived "Moleskine Standard", hence my cheap "throw away" notepad. Yeah, I know. Get over it.)

In my backpack currently:
- reading glasses & case
- wallet
- car keys (well, once I get out of the car)
- Nook Color (eReader tablet)
- a "throw away" notebook for random notes, shopping list, etc...
- Moleskine - Pocket-sized/lined paper for more organized notes, exercise log, food log, etc...
- Moleskine - Small/grid paper for more thoughtful notes
- Pen (Skilcraft U.S. Government pen - see picture below)
- Tupperware container for lunch (typically a '6 cup' size for salad)
- Travel mug for coffee on the train ride in (sometimes) and tea at work

Occasional/Seasonal:
- Sigg water bottle (I know, this could be an "all the time" item)
- Baseball cap (for after work if very sunny or wet)
- Winter cap and gloves
- Book (fiction or business-related book)

My bag is an old Timberland backpack with one main compartment and two small-to-medium outer compartments. I'm able to keep most of my small items organized in the two outer compartments but everything else gets unceremoniously dumped in the main compartment. It works for now, that's all I can saw about it.

On my body I like to keep it light. I typically only wear my jacket, have my iPhone (3GS), and ear buds.

In summary, I travel fairly light as-is but can stand to whittle it down a bit further. This isn't an obsession, which is good, but I find it fun to think about on occasion.
