The mountain biking ride over the weekend inspired me to resume riding my bike during lunch. I brought my single speed conversion to work on Tuesday and rode a mile or so down the MUT. Man, that was fun. Just cruising along the path occassionally standing to get up small hills... It reminded me of my younger years riding bikes around the neighborhood. Fun times they were.
Being older now, I can also see why cyclists use single speed/fixed gear bikes to train. Without other gears, you're forced to actually use your legs and build up strength. I know, on geared bikes you can still choose to work your legs but it is too easy/tempting to shift into an easier gear at times. On the single speed, you don't have that luxury.
Today I rode north into Portland, crossed the Hawthorne Bridge and headed south of OMSI. I stopped at some benches overlooking the Willamette River for a few minutes and took in the sights, sounds and smells of fresh air away from traffic. Another relaxing and fun ride.
