Commuter Conversion

I started a new project... converting my 1990 Giant Boulder mountain bike (aka: my commuter) into a single-speed. I have stripped off all of the unnecessary hardware (the shifters, front and rear derailers, associated cables). I removed the rear cassette (gears), added some spacers and a 16 tooth sprocket.

Only one gear.

I removed the small and large chainrings, leaving the 38t ring for now. What's left is a bicycle in pretty much it's simplest form. The only thing simpler would be a fixed gear bicycle which I do hope to build in the future, but all in due time.

Why am I doing this? For fun. Also because my road bike and full-suspension mountain bike feel out of place when cruising around Portland on my lunches. This mountain bike fits the bill perfectly but I then thought about trying something different. If that doesn't answer the question, then, well, I did it just because. :)

Bike without shifters, derailers, extra cables and extra gears.
(And yes, I do need to add a chain tensioner.)
